Go and sin no more.
Sometime ago a long established college friend of mine sat down across the table from me and looked up with the biggest smile on his face. “We finally had sex,” he said. “And it has changed everything. We are so much closer now. It’s like all of our problems just disappeared!”
Now, our culture would insist that I be happy for my friend and his girl friend. After all, he was happy with his actions, and that’s all that matters, right? That’s what I believed at the time, so I took the easy way out and put on a smile for my friend, fake though it was.
At the time I couldn’t help thinking of the woman taken in adultery, but I didn’t say anything. In other words I betrayed our Lord. It’s so easy as a pastor to confuse truth with acceptance. We fear unpopularity and accusations of sitting in judgement. Its a broad path and can lead to the loss of one’s integrity, possibly of one’s soul.
We are becoming more and more interested in the idea of acceptance. For the most part, this is a great thing. The old, ugly theology of using love as a way to disguise judgement and hatred has given way to a warmer, healthier Christian community, or has it?
But, as with many cultural shifts, there is a balance to keep in mind. In our efforts to “love the sinner, hate the sin,” we often find it easier to ignore the sin altogether, and confuse blind acceptance with genuine love.
And in a lot of ways that’s a good thing—we should humble ourselves to listen to, love and accept others. But in a culture where “Only God can judge me” is a common phrase heard among believers and non-believers alike, it’s easy to wonder: Are we getting love and acceptance all wrong?
“Love the sinner, hate the sin” has meant different things to different generations. Sometimes, it’s been used as an excuse to essentially ostracize people we view as “sinners” from the Church. But I often see our generation leaning too far the other direction: most of us take the phrase to mean, “Accept the sinner and their sinful behaviours, and just secretly hate the sin.”
The truth is, love and acceptance are not the same thing. The even bigger truth is that love is messy and hard, while acceptance is clean and easy. Love says, “Your actions are hurting you. And because I love you, I am going to hold you accountable.”
Love sometimes means telling your friends they’re wrong. It sometimes means calling them out on their behaviour. Love sometimes means disagreements and arguments, but those ultimately lead to personal and spiritual growth.
Thank you, Malcolm, not least for grounding this away from theory in the reality of the messiness of everyday life.

I’m glad as well that we can have this conversation at a time when things have calmed down here. I remember when Jess was discussing attending her friend’s marriage – that was a very stressful time. I’m glad she had you and NEO for support.

I and others remember the incident quite well.
Why was that ‘stressful’ if the person in question was a real friend? A real friend is not going to be angry with their friend for holding to deeply held principles and values. Otherwise all you have accomplished was to show them that principles are maleable and of less value than are appearances and perceptions of others. It was the easy way out and most today take the easy way out. Not on this blog perhaps . . . but in the prevailing eyes of the world. Seems to me that stress is caused when we make gray areas out of principles and defined teachings and then fret over our inablility to live with the appearance to others of being intolerant and unloving and without understanding.

I would agree with much of that. I think in hindsight that the issue was probably more complex because of Jess’ own views. Judging by some of her later pieces, e.g. the ones on hell, she was changing her mind on some things. Indeed, we all end up thinking things through more carefully over time – for example Rob’s piece ages ago on Poenal Substitution Theory.

Yes, of course some of this has been pieced together by me in retrospective, since I wasn’t around at the time. I’m not sure I could have done anything to help anyway. All I can say today is that we all have an obligation to the Truth. Like Plato’s Socrates would say, “We must follow wherever it leads.”

Indeed. Since God is transcendent, He is ultimately beyond our understanding. But He chooses to reveal Himself to us, because of His great love, working through grace.

First, I am struck by the fact that a so-called ‘friend’ would put you in such a situation whether you were already ordained or not. Because presumably one would think that as a ‘friend’ he already knew your Biblical understanding of sex as being a holy act reserved for the total self-giving of partners in Holy Matrimony. I personally could do without such friends who seem to be ‘testing’ your loyalty and friendship by pitting themselves against your very core principles. So he knowingly put you in a morally difficult situation. Some friend!
Secondly, let me guess, the two either never got married or if they did are now divorced or are not what anyone would call a happily married couple. I would guess that only because, it is rare these days when one thinks sex is merely a medicine for what ails you. His statement seems to indicate that he thought sex cured his problems in the relationship that he had with his girlfriend. It certainly may have relieved the pent-up desire and the natural hormonal urges of both but it is far from some kind of magical exixir for unhappy relationships. In fact, the introduction of sex into a relationship that is not open to life within marriage, brings its own set of problems. The danger of objectifying the partners such that the relationship is never looked at as it meant to be: the two becoming one within a covenant where exclusively, ‘I am yours and you are mine.’ And the opportunity to see the marital act as a crowning gem of an exclusive and abiding love for one another so much so that if God so blesses their union they will blessed with new life being the fruit of their mutual love.
So I don’t know how I would have reacted many years ago but I do know that my views and understanding have changed over these many years as I have matured. Perhaps such problems and difficulties should be part of a priest’s formation in seminary just as high school and college students should be educated in sex and marriage from a Christian point of view rather than a secular viewpoint.
It is sad when we cannot tell someone who is a friend what we truly believe. Perhaps they are just aquaintences which we imagined were friends.

I don’t know what happened to the girl friend. They didn’t marry but Paul made a successful marriage and has five children. In the end it has worked out. .

I am happy to hear that. But I fear like your friend Paul many of us lost that special gem that could have been an added gift to our spouse. So we only damaged ourselves and lessened the joy that might have otherwise been experienced in holy matrimony.

I partly agree and partly disagree with you. It is quite wonderful how a “living faith” can make up for past errors and lead to a deepening and strengthening of marriage, especially when one of the partners has the grace to be open with his bride.
Within the tender mercies of God we do learn from our mistakes, although we may have to travel down a dark path before we come to the light.

Since we all fail many times I suppose we cannot know for sure thuogh those who remained chaste before marriage and have a Christian view of marriage seem to have an experience that we can only imagine. Yes our joy is made manifest by being lifted out of the darkness of our misdeeds and by our failured to cooperate with Christ’s grace. It is sign of Christ’s love that he supplies what we need to succeed and all we need do is answer yes with our cooperation with that grace. Our demerits are ours alone as are our merits . . . though Christ, in His magnanimity and love affords us the merit and credit for our cooperation with His grace.
These are the hard parts where we often fail and they are only a shadow of the acts of a Christian martyr. It is good practice for those who may be called in this life to give all for the Glory of God.

Malcolm, as a priest, you might find this article interesting. It was taken from the answers that St. Padre Pio gave to a series of questions posed to the holy saint by letter and regarding how he viewed the Mass and what he, himself, experienced during Mass and even when not saying Mass. What a remarkable saint we had in this past century.

I learned about the 7 days of darkness from a catholic. She kept talking about it and how after the 3 days there will only be catholics left on earth….all the rest of us wicked people will be gone. David Moniker had his mystic, uh, whats her name…sister Fastina? The CC abounds in these mystics. Pio used to stand under a crucifix and hold up his hands to show the audience how he shares in the crucifixion, because hes a holyman of god. You fell for it. You all, some of you, deny the crazy stuff of yesteryear. But it was OKd by the Vatican. But, Jesus still knocks at your door thru all this. Everyone has something keeping one from seeking the risen Lord. Fame fortune, rock and roll, Joseph Smith, race cars. Everyone has some monkey on their back. The CC seems to have an endless supply of distractions, usually in the form of holymen, who have special powers. Tomas More is the patron saint of politicians. Each one has some power. You guys bite. As long as its unscriptural, you love it. This is more dangerous than Protestantism. They have no holymen or graven images. Most of the saved come from the ranks of the prot churches. Notice how I say “came from”. They leave it when they get saved.

Vatican that testifies to the truth and reality of these revelations on the Three Days of Darkness given by Our Lord to Padre Pio.
JANUARY 28, 1950
Keep your windows well covered. Do not look out. Light a blessed candle, which will suffice for many days. Pray the rosary. Read spiritual books. Make acts of Spiritual Communion, also acts of love, which are so pleasing to Us. Pray with outstretched arms, or prostrate on the ground, in order that many souls may be saved. Do not go outside the house. Provide yourself with sufficient food.
(yeah, sounds just like the god of the old test. What if one lives in a hut down in south America? I guess they die a miserable death. Don’t forget the rosary, says the Almighty)
. Let no one go across the yard, even to feed the animals–he who steps outside will perish! Cover your windows carefully. My elect shall not see My wrath.
(this is too good to be true. It gets better(;-D )
My angels, who are to be the executioners of this work, are ready with their pointed swords! They will take special care to annihilate all those who mocked Me and would not believe in My revelations.
No harm will come to those who are in the state of grace and who seek My mother’s protection.
The wind will roar. After a time, thunderbolts will be heard. Lock all the doors and windows. Talk to no one outside the house. Kneel down before a crucifix, be sorry for your sins, and beg My Mother’s protection.
(good brother Chalcedon says I believe wacky stuff. Sounds just like the Almighty God, exhorting people to seek him mother for protection. Well, cathols believe every word of this. But they don’t believe one gat danged word of scripture)
Those who disregard this advice will be killed instantly. The wind will carry with it poisonous gases which will be diffused over the entire earth. Those who suffer and die innocently will be martyrs and they will be with Me in My Kingdom.
( so god kills some people by accident.)
So now, Mary joins in to give instructions. This is priceless;……….
“I ask that all who hear My voice will take their Bibles, and if they do not have one, search, but find the right Bible, those printed not after 1965, My children.” – Jesus, October 5, 1985
“You must all obtain a copy of the Book of life and love, the Bible. Do not accept the new mods. Try to find in your bookstores the old Bibles, My children
(Mary wants you to go to bookstores looking for bibles. Does she have a preference? Barnes and Nobles maybe?)
The Douay-Rheims Bible was published in 1899. It is the official Bible of the Roman Catholic Church. Almost all other Bibles have been rewritten by Satan.

All of what you cite is total bunk: did you find any annotation that gave a source and authenticates the words put into Pio’s mouth?
“1. Padre Pio Did Not Predict Three Days of Darkness [emphasis in original]
“. . . There are printed materials containing prophecy of three days of darkness which attribute such a prophecy to Padre Pio. But the author [i.e. Birch] has in his possession sworn documents from the Capuchin Order stating that no such prophecy ever emanated [sic] from Padre Pio. All the author’s attempts to track down an authentic source from Padre Pio have led to the conclusion that; [sic] some person(s) either accidentally or willfully created these attributions of such a prophecy to Padre Pio” (Trial, Tribulation, & Triumph, p. 283).

Many Catholic seers and mystics such as Saints Hildegard of Bingen[citation needed], Gaspar del Bufalo[citation needed], Padre Pio[citation needed], Anna Maria Taigi[citation needed], Elisabeth Canori Mora[citation needed], Mariam Baouardi (Mary of Jesus Crucified)[citation needed], Rosa-Colomba Asdente[citation needed], Palma d’Oria[citation needed], Pere Lamy[citation needed], Marie Martel[citation
needed], and Marie Julie Jahenny[citation needed], have prophesied the Three Days of Darkness. However it is not endorsed by the Holy See.[
Blessed Anna Maria Taigi (1769–1837) is the most known seer of the Three Days of Darkness and describes the event in this way:
There shall come over the whole earth an intense darkness lasting three days and three nights. Nothing can be seen, and the air will be laden with pestilence which will claim mainly, but not only, the enemies of religion. It will be impossible to use any man-made lighting during this darkness, except blessed candles.
Marie-Julie Jahenny (1850-1941), known as the “Breton Stigmatist”, expanded upon the story of the Three Days of Darkness, saying that it will occur on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday when all of Hell will be let loose to strike at those outside their homes and those without a lit blessed candle of 100% pure wax
Adherents of the Three Days of Darkness are usually traditionalist Catholics or sedevacantists. The latter group hopes that a “true pope” will be miraculously designated by an apparition of Saint Peter and Saint Paul; this tangential belief assumes that the most recent pontiffs of the Church are in fact “antipopes”. There is also controversy over whether the twentieth-century saint and stigmatist Saint Pio endorsed and taught on the future Three Days of Darkness as the authenticity of the alleged words of Saint Pio are disputed

All of this is just to show what unsaved religious people come up with. Chief being the mystical filled CC. The Mormons are full to their eyeballs with horse manure also. Bottom line is, while you mess around with human deities, Jesus still stands at your door knocking. These charlatans who claim to share in the crucifiction particularly make me mad that they cheapen the sacrifice of my Lord. He doesn’t share his glory with anyone or anything. Cathols claim that this Mary almost died at the crucifixion, therefor she participated in our redemption. This makes me particularly upset. She almost died….well almost doesn’t get it. Close is only good in horseshoes and atom bombs. Jesus died for my salvation….not this Pio scam artist. The best I can do is warn you.

While I have read otherwise but according to this group St. Pio never made such a prophecy concerning the Three Days of Darkness. However this appears to be an authorative source.
I recieved this email from The Padre Pio Center for North America:
“Dear “Doubting” Thomas :-),
I applaud your diligence in seeking truth. The prophecy of the “Three Days of Darkness” is correctly attributed to the late mystic, Blessed Anna Maria Taigi.
I believe that there will be a Chastisement, a Big Wakeup Call for all. The private revelations concerning the 3 days of darkness have Church approval. However people like to “add-on” and it is hard to find a good source.

Re: 3 days of darkness?
——————————————————————————–
I remember telling people in my class about this and they were too scared to sleep for the whole week.
new post…..Yeap! There are saints who told of the impending 3 days darkness and Judgment day.
When Jesus appeared to St Faustina, Jesus also warned about the 3 days darkness.
SAINT FAUSTINA was given this message by Jesus – you can find it in her diary:
“All light in the heavens will be extinguished, and there will be a great darkness over the whole earth. Then the sign of the Cross will be seen in the sky, and from the openings where the hands and feet of the Savior were nailed will come forth great lights which will light up the earth for a period of time. This will take place shortly before the last day.
But, as Catholics, we must only listen to the authority and teachings of the Catholic Church, not some individual or group that predicts bogus end times prophecy. And since the Catholic Church accepts the private revelations of St Faustina,I suggest everyone read St Faustina’s Diary regarding the Divine Mercy.

The Three Days of Darkness
Question from Joe Solomon on 2/8/2002:
Where in the book of Revelations does it read about the three days of darkness and the end of time?
Answer by Colin B. Donovan, STL on 2/18/2002:
The prophecy of three days of darkness is not in the Book of Revelation but in the revelations of the end times provided by Catholic prophets St. Caspar del Bufulo, Blessed Anna Maria Taigi, Blessed Elizabeth Canori-Mora and Blessed Mary of Jesus Crucified. These holy Catholics of the 19th century, the last two of whom Pope John Paul II beatified, speak of a Minor Tribulation of the world (minor compared to the Great Tribulation of the Antichrist at the end of the world), as a time of purification leading into an age of peace.
