At the Request of Nicholas:
My List of Scriptures/Hymns/Books that bear upon my
Spiritual Life: a very abbreviated version.
Song of Songs
Allegory of deepening dimensions: the love and betrothal of the Church (the Bride) and Christ (the Bridegroom) and additionally concerning the individual love and betrothal of our particular Soul (the Bride) to Christ (the Bridegroom) during its journey through the spiritual life taking us from the purgative through the illuminative and finally to the unitive way which is typical of mystical spiritual theology.
All the Psalms
For obvious reasons: they express love, praise and the battle between good and evil.
Luke 10:42
But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke 9:23
And he said to all: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Hebrews 12:6 also see: Proverbs 3:12 and Revelation3:19
For whom the Lord loveth, he chastiseth; and he scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
1 Corinthians 10:13
. . . And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able . . .
Luke 12:48
. . . And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required . . .
Seven Last Words of Christ
- Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34)
- Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:43)
- Woman, behold thy son. (John 19:26)
- My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (Mark 15:34)
- I thirst. (John 19:28)
- It is consummated. (John 19:30)
- Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. (Luke23:46)

Very interesting; I’m pleased to see the Song of Songs there. No doubt you’ve heard the remark about how when the Beloved comes to the Shulamite, he cannot enter her house unless she opens the door from within.

Another interesting parallel to the spiritual life. 🙂

Where would we be without the mystics God has given us? And His graciousness in pouring out His Spirit on us as St Peter says…

Indeed so. There have been those who have mentored us from the OT days all the way through our own.

For me, “My Song is Love Unknown” is a beautiful hymn for Holy Week.

Very wonderful. For this Lent, I am taking the opportunity to prepare for ‘last things’ by taking “remember you are dust and dust you shall return” literally by selecting the scriptures and hymns I want for my funeral mass. Not expecting they will be needed soon mind you, but have to prepare for it sometime. Anyway, the process is very reflective because there are so many scriptures I love as well. AAthW have a blessed Lent.

Hi Ponder. Yes, I too need to that someday soon. The last thing I want is some choir singing Lord of the Dance at my funeral with a bunch of girls with scarves prancing up and down the aisles. 🙂
