Yesterday’s post by Jess and the responses prompt this, from Cavafy:
When suddenly, at midnight, you hear
an invisible procession going by
with exquisite music, voices,
don’t mourn your luck that’s failing now,
work gone wrong, your plans
all proving deceptive—don’t mourn them uselessly.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
say goodbye to her, the Alexandria that is leaving.
Above all, don’t fool yourself, don’t say
it was a dream, your ears deceived you:
don’t degrade yourself with empty hopes like these.
As one long prepared, and graced with courage,
as is right for you who proved worthy of this kind of city,
go firmly to the window
and listen with deep emotion, but not
with the whining, the pleas of a coward;
listen—your final delectation—to the voices,
to the exquisite music of that strange procession,
and say goodbye to her, to the Alexandria you are losing.
Farewell to the America I have loved all my life. Whilst it lasted, it was the glory of the age. We shall not see its like again. When the barbarians feast in the Senate, we shall look back with useless longing.
Thank you C for summing up what many of us now are feeling. Cavafy is an apt spokesman once again.

I share you feelings. The America I admire is still there, but in eclipse.

Cavafy is indeed apt. Are we dead yet,I don’t know. One or the other of my posts is true, not both. Time will tell, and we’re not buried YET.

The American spirit can still burn through the smog which surrounds it.

I believe this also but, I’m not sure that it exists in enough of us. I don’t believe many have given up but many are considering a long vacation. I had a more reflective comment for this but it has grown to the point that it has become a post, which will be along reasonably soon.

I shall read the post with interest. If I had a cat he would be in danger.

Thank you for that, I doubt that it will be worthy of a cat’s life, even if he has 8 to spare.

There are moments when the electoral majority deserves what it votes for; a shame about the rest of us.

I quite agree, on both counts.

And so my comment, if 1200+ words can be termed a comment is up, for this indeed speaks deeply to me.
